SSD Partition Recovery: Recover a Lost or Deleted Partition on an SSD

SSD partition recovery restores a lost, deleted, or unallocated partition and the files on it. On SSDs, TRIM can make deleted data harder to recover, so acting quickly and avoiding initialization or formatting is critical. This guide compares free file recovery from a lost partition with full partition restoration, and provides step-by-step MyRecover methods, including bootable-media recovery when Windows will not start.

Restore Deleted Partition From An SSD, Has Anyone Done This Successfully?

I accidentally deleted a partition on my SSD while managing drives, and it had important files I still need. I'm looking for advice on SSD partition recovery, what steps to take right away, and whether anyone has successfully recovered a deleted partition without making the data unrecoverable.

- Question from pixenate.com

If an SSD partition disappears from File Explorer or shows as unallocated space in Disk Management, the files on it may still be recoverable. Whether you can restore the partition itself depends on how it was lost — accidental deletion, partition-table corruption, or a format — and, on an SSD, whether TRIM has already cleared the data blocks. The right SSD partition recovery software scans the drive read-only and lets you preview what can be saved before you write anything back.

This guide explains how SSD partition recovery works and walks you through two MyRecover methods: getting your files back from the lost partition for free, and restoring the partition and its data together. For SSD-specific file loss that is not about partitions, see our Samsung SSD T7 data recovery guide for another common scenario.

Common Causes of a Lost SSD Partition

Most “lost partition” cases fall into a few patterns, and the fix depends on which one you hit:

  • Accidental deletion in Disk Management — right-clicking the wrong volume and choosing Delete Volume.
  • Partition-table damage — a failed resize, sudden power loss, or a buggy third-party partition tool corrupts the MBR or GPT.
  • A Windows upgrade, clone, or restore that rewrote the disk layout.
  • A missing drive letter — the partition is healthy but hidden from File Explorer.
  • Disk errors or malware that remove the partition entry.

Identifying the cause tells you whether you can simply reassign a letter or need recovery software.

SSDs and TRIM: How They Affect Recovery

SSDs behave differently from hard drives. After you delete or format a partition, the operating system may send a TRIM (Data Set Management) command so the controller knows those blocks are no longer in use. Once the SSD garbage-collects them, the original data is typically gone for good.

That does not mean recovery is impossible. TRIM is not instant, and many deletions are detected by recovery tools before the controller erases the blocks. The practical rule is simple: stop using the SSD the moment you notice the missing partition, and run recovery as soon as you can.

What to Do Before You Start (and What to Avoid)

Before you open any tool, a few cautions protect your chances:

  • Do not initialize the disk or create a new volume in the unallocated space — that writes a fresh partition table over the old one. Learn: does initializing a disk erase Data?
  • Do not run CHKDSK or accept a “Format this drive?” prompt; both can overwrite recoverable data.
  • Stop writing to the SSD immediately; install SSD data recovery software freely on a different drive.
  • If the SSD is a data drive, connect it to a working PC as a secondary disk.
  • Check the SSD partition status in Disk Management first. If it just has no drive letter, assign a drive letter to resolve it. Or you have to try other solutions.

Method 1. Recover Files from the Lost SSD Partition - MyRecover (Free)

If your main goal is to get your photos, documents, and videos back — not rebuild the partition itself — MyRecover's Partition Lost Recovery is a free way to do it. It scans the lost partition and recovers your SSD files, though it does not restore the partition structure.

This is SSD lost partition recovery: you retrieve the data without rebuilding the volume itself. Here is how it works:

Step 1. Install MyRecover Free on a different drive, not the SSD you are recovering.

Step 2. Open MyRecover. On the main screen, tap Partition Lost Recovery, and select the lost partition on the SSD according to the volume size, then click Scan.

Step 3. Preview found files by type, name, or folder path to confirm they are intact.

Step 4. Select the files you need, click Recover, and save them to a different destination drive.

Notes:✎...
You can also search your files by file name and file extension from the search box at the top right.
MyRecover provides up to 500MB for free recovery; please upgrade to MyRecover Professional or Technician for more SSD file recovery.
MyRecover keeps the original folder structure and file name instead of a messy structure and unrecognized file name.

This method is ideal when the partition contents matter more than the volume itself, and it costs nothing to try.

MyRecover

Method 2. Restore the Lost SSD Partition and Its Data (Professional)

When you want the partition and everything on it back together, MyRecover Professional's Partition Recovery is the feature built for that. Partition Recovery is a paid function available in MyRecover Professional and MyRecover Technician; it aims to recover the partition and its files as a unit. MyRecover works with common SSD file systems, including NTFS and exFAT, and supports modern NVMe and M.2 drives.

Here is how to recover a lost SSD partition and all its files with MyRecover:

Step 1. Open MyRecover Professional after downloading, and start the Partition Recovery wizard.

Step 2. Select the disk that contained the missing partition, and click Next.

Step 3. Choose a search method — Fast Search for recent changes or Full Search for a thorough pass — and click Next.

Step 4. When the lost partition appears in the results, select it, and click Proceed.

Step 5. Wait a moment; it will show the SSD partition recovery result. Then go to the original partition to check the partition and its files; everything should be fine.

If the partition was NTFS and became inaccessible after a Windows error, our guide to recovering a deleted or corrupted NTFS partition explains the signs to watch for. For exFAT partitions on USB SSDs or SD cards, the exFAT partition recovery steps apply the same ideas.

MyRecover
  • Recover Deleted Files Easily with Simple Clicks
  • 1000+ File Formats Supported
  • Support HDD, SSD, External Hard Drive, USB Drive, SD Card, etc./li>
  • Quickly Find Files Using File Types, Name, Size, etc.
  • Preview Files Before Recovering

Method 3. Recover SSD Lost Partition When Windows Won't Start (Bootable USB)

If the lost partition is on the system disk(SSD)and the PC no longer boots, you cannot simply recover files and its lost partition on the SSD. You have to create bootable media first with MyRecover; then MyRecover's bootable media lets you start the machine from a USB drive and run SSD lost partition recovery from there. Learn how to recover a deleted partition using a bootable USB.

Step 1. On a working computer, download MyRecover, then launch it. Prepare a USB drive of at least 32GB, then connect it to the working computer.

Step 2. Tap PC Crashed Recovery, tick the USB drive, and hit Create to wait for the process to complete.

Step 2. Connect the bootable USB to the affected PC and boot from it (change the boot order to boot from the USB drive).

Step 3. Then MyRecover will automatically run; tap Partition Lost Recovery or Partition Recovery to perform SSD lost partition recovery according to the above steps.

Method 4. Use DiskPart to Bring a Missing Partition Back Online

Sometimes the partition is intact but has no drive letter, so File Explorer cannot show it. In that case, you may not need recovery software at all. You have to use DiskPart to assign a drive letter to the lost SSD partition.

Step 1. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run diskpart.

Step 2. Run list disk, then select disk N for your SSD.

Step 3. Run list partition, then select partition N for the missing volume.

Step 4. Run assign to give it a drive letter.

If the partition was actually deleted rather than just unlettered, stop here and use Method 1 or 2 instead of forcing a letter.

Choosing SSD Partition Recovery Software: What to Look For

Not every SSD partition recovery tool — and not every option marketed as the best SSD partition recovery software or as free SSD data recovery software — handles both jobs: pulling files out of a lost partition and restoring the partition itself. When you compare options, check these points:

  • SSD and TRIM awareness, plus support for NVMe and M.2 drives.
  • Both Partition Lost Recovery (data only) and full partition restoration.
  • A free scan and preview so you can verify files before paying.
  • Read-only scanning that never writes to the SSD you are recovering.
  • Clear guidance for drives that will not boot.

Summary

A lost SSD partition is often recoverable if you stop using the drive and act quickly, especially because TRIM can permanently clear deleted blocks. Use Partition Lost Recovery to get your files back for free, or MyRecover Professional's Partition Recovery to restore the partition and its data together. For technicians and businesses managing many machines, MyRecover Technician extends the same recovery to unlimited PCs. Always save recovered data to a different drive, and avoid initializing or formatting the disk before you recover.

FAQs About SSD Partition Recovery

Can a deleted SSD partition be recovered after TRIM runs?

TRIM makes recovery harder but not always impossible. The SSD controller only erases marked blocks during garbage collection, which is not instant, so recovery tools may still find files before that happens. Stop using the drive immediately and scan with read-only software to check what remains.

Is there free SSD partition recovery software?

Yes. MyRecover's Partition Lost Recovery is a free function that recovers files from a lost partition, and the free edition lets you try it within its recovery limit. Restoring the partition itself is a paid feature in MyRecover Professional and Technician. Preview everything first so you know what is recoverable.

What is the difference between recovering files and recovering the partition?

Recovering files (Partition Lost Recovery) pulls your data out of the lost partition but does not rebuild the volume. Recovering the partition (Partition Recovery, Professional) aims to restore the partition and its contents together. Choose file recovery when the data matters most, and partition recovery when you want the volume back.

Should I initialize the disk or run CHKDSK on the missing partition?

No. Initializing the disk writes a new partition table over the old one, and CHKDSK or a “Format this drive?” prompt can overwrite recoverable data. Leave the disk as-is, connect it to another PC if needed, and run recovery software before making any changes.

Does MyRecover support NVMe and M.2 SSDs?

Yes. MyRecover is designed for Windows storage, including internal SSDs such as NVMe and M.2 drives, as well as USB and external SSDs. It works with common file systems like NTFS and exFAT. As with any drive, stop writes and recover to a different disk for the best outcome.

Why does my SSD partition show as unallocated space?

Unallocated space usually means the partition entry is gone — from deletion, a corrupted MBR/GPT, or a failed resize — or the drive letter was removed. If the data is still there, recovery software can often read the lost partition. Avoid creating a new volume in that space until you have recovered your files.
